Economizer vs. Standard Wall Mount AC — Which Should You Choose?

Every wall mount air conditioner in our lineup is available in two configurations: standard (non-economizer) and economizer-equipped. They cost different amounts up front and behave differently over the life of the unit. Here's how to decide which one fits your project.

What an Economizer Actually Does

A factory-installed economizer is a damper and control system that brings in cool, dry outside air to cool the space directly — without running the compressor at all. A sensor continuously checks outdoor air conditions; whenever it's cool and dry enough, the compressor locks out and the unit runs on outside air alone. When conditions warm up or humidity rises, the damper closes and mechanical cooling takes back over automatically. The whole process is unattended — no manual switching required.

The Case for an Economizer

Lower operating cost. In most US climates, an economizer-equipped unit can spend a large share of the year — often thousands of hours — running on free outside air instead of mechanical cooling. For a site that runs 24/7/365, like a telecom shelter or equipment enclosure, that adds up to a meaningful reduction in electricity cost over the unit's service life.

Less compressor wear. Every hour the compressor doesn't run is an hour it's not wearing toward end of life. Sites that use an economizer typically see less frequent compressor-related service calls.

Better for unattended, energy-sensitive sites. Telecom shelters, remote equipment enclosures, and any 24/7 unmanned space are the classic use case — nobody's there to manage energy use manually, and the savings compound over years of continuous operation.

The Case for a Standard (Non-Economizer) Unit

Lower upfront cost. Without the damper assembly, actuator, and enthalpy sensor, standard units cost less to purchase.

Simpler mechanically. Fewer moving parts means fewer components that can eventually need service — a consideration for sites with tighter maintenance budgets or less accessible locations.

Better fit for humid or dusty climates. Sites in consistently hot, humid regions (where outside air rarely qualifies as "free cooling") may not see enough economizer run-hours to justify the added cost. Similarly, very dusty or sandy environments can add filter-maintenance overhead to the outside-air intake.

Simpler for short-term or temporary installs. Job-site trailers, temporary classrooms, and short-duration deployments often don't stay in place long enough for the energy savings to outweigh the higher purchase price.

Our Recommendation

If the unit will run continuously for years in an unattended shelter and your climate sees a reasonable number of cool, dry hours annually, the economizer configuration is almost always worth the added upfront cost. If you're outfitting a temporary space, working with a tight capital budget, or installing in a climate where outside air is rarely usable for cooling, the standard configuration is the more practical choice.
